Company A 5th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Cavalry Chatham County, Georgia Captain William H. Wiltberger Captain James A Zitroner OFFICERS AND STAFF Captain William H. WILTBERGER ,Son of Captain Peter Wiltberger (1791-1853) and Susan (Green) Wiltberger (1788-1849), was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 17 Sept 1825. On 23 Nov 1861, he was commissioned Captain of Cavalry in the Confederate Army. He was given command of Company D, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Volunteer Cavalry, or the “Georgia Hussars”.On 20 Jan 1863 the company was re- designated as Company A of the 5th Cavalry Regiment. He commanded the company through the Coastal Campaign, Olustee/Florida, South Carolina Campaign, and the Battle of Atlanta. On 26 Jul 1864, he was promoted to Major and given command of a Confederate Army Convalescent Camp at Union Springs, Alabama. Major Wiltberger served the final 11 months of the war as camp commander. Baker enlisted in the Georgia Hussars (Company A), Second Georgia Cavalry Battalion in Oct 1861, at Savannah, Georgia. He transferred to Company A, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He was paroled at Goldsboro, North Carolina in April 1865. Stephen J. M. Baker was born 19 Feb 1826 in Bryan County, Georgia. [GSU-PEN] J. W. BALEY S. H. BOWMAN Jefferson J. BOYD R. E. Brantley enlisted in Company D, 2nd Battalion Georgia Cavalry, 26 Nov 1862 . He Transferred to Company A, 5th Regiment Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. On 1 Sep 1863, he transferred to Company F, 54th Regiment Georgia Infantry. He appears on roll of Company E, 1st Regiment Troops and Defenses, Macon, Georgia, for November - December 1864, as present. Detailed clerk at Camp Wright Hospital. No later record. William J. LOGAN William MASON, jR. C. C. MATTOX James H. McCOMMONS was living in Greene County, Georgia, in 1897, when he was a witness for Thomas S Wilson's pension application. D. McDONALD Thomas McGLASHAN Joseph H. MORGAN John R. MORTON B. F. NEWTON J. C. NEWTON Stephen W. OUTLAW Mahlon PADGETT Charles Braddock PATTERSON enlisted ON 2 Dec 1861, IN Company D, 1st Regiment "Savannah City Light Guards". He was discharged by civil authority on 14 Jan 1863. He enlisted at a private Company A, 5th Regiment Georgia Cavalry, on 17 Aug 1863. Paroled Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865 , with remark, "absent with wagon train near Greensboro, North Carolina." He was born 3 Sep 1845, and died 27 Nov 1920. [HEN] J. M. PATTERSON John T. RAHN W. H. ROBERTS C. W. ROGERS A. C. SCOTT, Jr. William F. SEWELL died of wounds received at Monroe's Cross Roads, North Carolina. His body was found, on the banks of Persimmon Branch, lying on a pallet made from part of a tent. His horse was still by his side. [KCNS MANGUM II] J. J. SHEPPARD Robert B. Slater enlisted 10 Jun 1861 in Company I, 9th Regiment "Toombs Guards". He was discharged, on account of general debility, at Culpeper, Virginia, on 2 Jan 1862. He then enlisted as a private in Company D, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 11 Dec 1862. He transferred to Company A, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry 20 Jan 1863. Pension records show he was at home on sick furlough close of war. [HEN] C. S. SMITH Julius J. SMITH enlisted as a private 1 Aug 1861 in Company B, 8th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged at Richmond, Virginia, 1 Jan 1862. He then enlisted as a private in Company D, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry 26 Feb 1862. On detail as clerk in Office of Chief Surgeon at Savannah, Georgia, 31 Jul - 30 Nov 1862 . Transferred to Company A, 5th Regiment Georgia Cavalry Dec 1862. On detail as clerk in Office Chief Surgeon, Savannah, Georgia, 1 Jan - 18 June 1863 , on which date he was transferred to C. S. Navy. Captured at Savannah River, Georgia, while serving as paymaster's clerk on C. S. S. Resolute, December 13, 1864. Paroled at Fort Delaware, Delaware, and forwarded to City Point, Virginia, for exchange 27 Feb 1865. No later record. [Hen] M. SMITH T. SMITH G. A. STALEY W. C. STALEY Saymour H. STEWART H. M. STODDARD was enlisted in Company A, 5th Georgia cavalry by Captain WILTBERGER on 19 Feb 1863. He was discharged by order of Confederate State Court Judge HARDIN, 23 Jun 1863. Re-enlisted 13 Oct 1863 in Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry by Captain Henry J. STROBHAR. He was detailed, by order of General MERCER, to the Signal Corps as a telegraph operator. He appears to have remained in the Signal Corps until the end of the war. [MIL REC] J. R. THOMPSON J. T. ULMER H. J. WADE B. C. WAGNER E. P. WAIT R. W. WALL John W. WALTERS J. H. WATSON John S. WEATHERLY Joseph M. WEATHERLY John P. WEBB John W. WEED Michael WIGGINS P. C. WIGGINS E. H. WILLIAMS Frank M. WILLIS enlisted in Captain Chisholm's Company Georgia State Troops 17 May 1861, and was mustered out May 1862 . He was then enlisted and appointed 2nd Corporal of Company F, 54th Regiment Georgia Infantry on 13 May 1862 . He transferred to Company A, 5th Regiment Ga. Cavalry on 1 Sep 1863 .
