Johnson, 66, of 323 E.DeRenne Ave., was killed last night in a traffic accident on the Ogeechee Road. Mr. Johnson had just stepped from his car, which had skidded to a halt just south of the Dean Forest Road intersection, when an oncoming car struck the open door, crushing him. He was dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital. Police said Mr. Johnson apparently had stopped because of a flat tire, apparently caused when his car struck the side of a bridge. Wife Unhurt. His wife, a passenger in the car, was unhurt. The drive of the other car was Billy K. Evans, 38, of 1664 Winter Drive. State Trooper W. L. Gordy said Mr. Johnson had been driving north behind a tractor-trailer truck. His car went into the skid as the truck began to turn left into the Dean Forest Road. Evans, whose view was blocked by the turning truck, apparently was unaware Mr. Johnson's car was straddling the road, Gordy said. Joined Force in '33 Johnson joined the police force July 8, 1933. He served as a patrolman for only two weeks before he was named a motorcycle officer. Johnson spent five years in that capacity and then was appointed detective. He was promoted to sergeant in 1947. He left the police force in 1949 but returned to service in 1955. He retired on April 1, 1965. Johnson was a crack pistol shot and won numerous medals for the Savannah police in pistol competitions. He was also instrumental in the organization of the Policemen's Union, and worked through the union for a civil service bill. Surviving Mr. Johnson are his wife, Mrs. Lucy Lewis Johnson of Savannah; two sons, Cary J. Johnson Jr. of Hazlehurst and Joseph L. Johnson of Savannah; two daughters, Mrs. Robert T. Thompson of Ridgeland, S.C., and Mrs. Maurice DeLoach of Chesapeake, Va.; a brother Willie Johnson of Miami; five sisters, Mrs. Mildred Bragg, Mrs. Jessie Brown and Mrs. Katherine (sic - should be "Catherine") Bragg, all of Savannah, Mrs. Essie Saxton of Glennville and Mrs. Janie Akins of Reidsville; 12 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Temple. Burial will be at Hillcrest Abbey. Sipple's Mortuary is in charge.
