August 4, 1866 Mirror and Farmer (Manchester, N.H.), Saturday, August 4, 1866, p. 2, col. 4 THE CHOLERA ON TYBEE ISLAND - Awful Mortality. - The following is an extract of a private letter from on board the steamer San Salvador, at Tybee Island, Savannah, dated July 24: - We landed 470 troops on Tybee Island, and yesterday 80 of the members answered to their names.. The cholera has done its work among them sure. They were so completely demoralized that one hundred deserted, and are scattered all over these Islands and they say that some have even got to Savannah. Of course people there are much frightened. I have been in a good many tight places in my life, but never saw anything to equal this. It was a common thing to see them bury ten before breakfast, and the same number before supper, - and so we used to sit on deck and see them carry the bodies along to their long home, day after day, and finally requested the authorities to remove the burial place, which was right in front of the ship. The sights we used to see were too much for the strongest of us. I hope it will be the last of that kind I shall see. It is all over now, and we are all in pretty good spirits.
