Barnett and her two-year-old son, of Savannah, were killed her today when an automobile in which they were riding was struck by a Central of Georgia train enroute from Dover to Dublin. Her husband and another son escape injury, although the machine was dragged 50 feet by the train. The bodies were badly mangled when the engine passed over both. How the Savannah man, an employee of Traub & Co., and his other son escaped death is beyond the understanding of those who saw the accident. The woman and her youngest child were sitting in the car on the side struck by the engine. Her husband and other son were not thrown from the car. Barnett saw the train approaching as he neared the crossing, but both were going too fast to stop. Marks in the road show he applied the brake some 50 feet away, but the car was not brought to a standstill until both front wheels had crossed the track. The engine struck the automobile at its midsection. The train was not seen earlier because the car had up side curtains, it was said. The bodies were removed to a local undertaking establishment and were sent to Savannah during the day. The man, his wife and two children came to Statesboro from Savannah last night to attend the silver wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Anderson, relatives. They had started their return journey this morning, when the tragedy occurred. Additional Comments: Transcriber's note: I'm not related to or researching the Barnett family.
