Carson. She was the third of seven daughters of John A. Gere, D.D. and Mrs. Sarah Neal Gere. Her mother and the mother of the late Grover Cleveland were sisters. She was born in Baltimore on the 3rd day of June, 1834, and married Carvill H. Carson in that city in May, 1855. The family moved to Savannah in 1870. Seven children were born of the union - John A.G. Carson of Savannah, Mrs. J. Wisenbaker of Valdosta, Rev. C.H. Carson, Miss Hattie G. Carson of Cuba, David C. Carson of Savannah, Mrs. W. B. Stubbs of Savannah, and Mrs. E. K. Demmond of Savannah. All survive her except Rev. C. H. Carson. She is survived also by twenty-nine grandchildren and fifteen great grand-children. She will be buried at Bonaventure Cemetery this afternoon, December 14, at 3:30 o'clock. Rev. A.M. Hughlett, the pastor of Wesley Monumental Church of which she was from the time of her arrival in Savannah a prominent and useful member, will officiate. The pall bearers will be A.W. Morehouse, W.E. Thompson, George M. Williams, W.W. Cornell, E.F. Lovell, Jr. and D.E. Atkins. Mrs. Carson had a wide circle of friends who greatly admired her and many of whom were deeply attached to her. She was a lady of education, refinement, and culture, always exemplifying the highest Christian virtues and the finest graces of womanhood. While forceful and strong, she was always gentle and tender. Her union with her devoted husband was ideal in its completeness and in their mutual affection. Her children and all her family regarded her with the deepest affection and reverence. All of them will be under a lifelong indebtedness to her for her influence, which was always potent and uplifting. It is not extravagant to say that our city has not known a woman of finer type, or of more helpful influence upon all who enjoyed her friendship. Additional Comments: The children were John Avery Gere Carson, Sarah Augusta (Carson) Wisenbaker, Carville Hynson Carson, Hattie Gere Carson (a missionary in Cuba), David Carson Carson (same middle and last names), Helen Neal (Carson) Stubbs, and Fannie Hynson (Carson) Demmond.
