Nilsson, 85, of Rte. Box 68, Talahi Island died yesterday at Chatham Nursing Home after a short illness. She had lived in Savannah since 1911. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Ascension and a member of the Mary Linn Circle. She was a native of Stockholm [incorrect], Sweden. Surviving are two sons, Walde H. Nilsson [Sr.] and Sefo W. Nilsson; a brother William Embring of Escondia, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Annie Carlson [Carlsson] of Stockholm [incorrect], Sweden; eight grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren, and a number of nephews and nieces. Sipple's Mortuary is in charge. Additional Comments: Selma was born on December 11, 1880, in Tuna, province of Smaland, Sweden. She was one of eight chilren of Carl Jonsson and Louisa Andersson. She worked as a domestic, eventually rising to be head of staff for the Hammerskjold family (Hjalmar Hammerskjold became prime minister in Sweden and his youngest son, Dag, became Secretary General of the United Nations). Selma and Nils Peter Nilsson, her first cousin, were married on July 17, 1911, in Liverpool, England. Nils Peter had already lived in the U.S. for some years and become a citizen. He worked for the Army Corps of Engineers in Savannah. He and Selma appear together on the manifest of the S.S. Celtic that sailed from Liverpool to New York, where they landed on July 30, 1911. On the Celtic manifest, Peter and Selma listed their ultimate destination as Savannah, Georgia, and that they did not yet have their tickets for their continued journey. Selma and Peter (who died on April 9, 1950, in Savannah) are buried in Hillcrest Cemetery.
