The 92 year old state commander of the Spanish-American veterans was among some 1,050 Chatham countians who left home in 1898 to defend his country. A resident of 12 E. 38th St, Paul was a veteran of Foregin Wars and a member of the Veterans Council of Savannah, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the International Association of Machinists. In a News-Press interview in October, 1971, Paul proudly recalled the day when "a group of us go tired of waiting to get signed up; and rushed to Macon to volunteer for service in the Spanish American War. "While we were on the transport on our way to Cuba they declared Armistice," he said, "but I wasn't mad. We stayed on police duty--fighting guerrillas and outlaws and trying to keep order." Armed with a gun "from way back in 1867." Paul worked with his partner "an old Indain fighter wo really knew what he was doing." Born in Scotland, Paul came to the United States when he was six with his twin sister. A retired railroadman, he had been active in veterans' affairs ever since his discharge in 1899. Surviving him are two daughters, Mrs Rosemary P Hatch of Savannah and Mrs John J Starrs of Tampa, Fla; a sister, Mrs Isabelle F Paul of Savannah Beach; two grandsons, Roddy J Hatch Jr of Savannah and Joseph T Hatch of Nashville, Tenn; 10 great grandchildren, a great great granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10 am Saturday at Fox and Weeks Funeral Home. Burial will be at Bonaventure Cemetery.
