In the death of Commodore Tatnall, at Savannah, Georgia has lost one of her celebrities. He was born at Bonaventure, four miles from Savannah, November, 1796 and was therefore seventy-five years old. He was grandson of Governor Tatnall. He entered the navy in 1812, became Lieutenant in 1818, Commander in 1838, and Captain in 1850. He was in very considerable active service. He was with Decatur, Perry and Porter in Algeria, Africa and Mexico. In the late war he took a conspicuous part, working with inadaquate resources, yet evincing the highest courage and skill.
