K. Rogers MRS. ELIZABETH HORTENSE McLESTER HAWKINS This reproduction of the miniature of his bride carried by Capt. Chas. A. Hawkins, shows the marks of a bullet made in civil war days. He entered the service of the Confederacy Sept. 4, 1861 at Macon where he had graduated from Mercer University. While on a two weeks furlough in the fall of 1862, he married Miss McLester who never saw him again after he rejoined his company. He fell at Winchester June 13, 1863, but urged his men to go forward. He died the following evening. Clippings from Macon paper (1863) contain high tribute to the character of this chivalrous young southerner. "Miss Betty" who belonged to the highest type of southern womanhood—a gentle refined lady, spent her life in Chattahoochee Co.
