K. Rogers LA FAYETTE HARP Hon. LaFayette Harp was born Oct. 28, 1831 and spent his entire life, three quarters of a century, in this county. He married first Callie King, who was a true helpmeet for many years, and he was an exemplary husband and father. Several years after her death, he married her sister, Mrs. Lizzie Wallace, and it is probable no elderly couple ever lived more happily in a home made pleasant by congenial companionship. He and his family were consistent members of the Baptist church. Only two of his sons A. S. and K. G. Harp of Cusseta are now living. Mr. Harp served his county as senator and representatives in the legislature; was tax receiver and collector and sheriff for about thirty-five years. He was prompt, fearless, and efficient in the discharge of his duty in all official postions to which he was elected by the people of this county. In his younger years he was considered one of the most remarkable men in the state serving as sheriff, for he did not carry a gun and always arrested the person sought. The agility of his movements, combined with his powerful physical strength, intelligently directed, served in lieu of weapons. He was a soldier of the Confederacy, serving throughout that trying period with gallantry and bravery. He commanded a company in 56th Ga. Militia, first under Col. Colquitt and later under Col. Daniel. Capt. Harp was greatly beloved by his comrades as he was by his family and friends all his life. At the height of his career he was often called the most popular man in Chattahoochee Co. and no better testimony of the esteem of the people among whom he lived could have been shown than the many official honors bestowed upon him.
