K. Rogers JOHN C. FORSYTH McCOOK A son of Joshua R. McCook, John C. F., also spent his life and reared his family in Chattahoochee while none of his descendants live here at present. He represented the county three times in the General Assembly of Georgia and was one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of his day. J. E. Chapman Sr., Attorney of Columbus, Ga., who lived in the McCook home for several years says, "Uncle John McCook was one of the most scrupulously honorable and kindest hearted man I ever saw. He was prudent in spending and while called close in money matters was always generous in helping the really needy." "Mr. McCook from Chattahoochee and Mr. Chapman from Muscogee served one term, 1896-97 in the legislature together. Mr. McCook, like his father was interested in educational affairs of his county and was chairman of the Board of Education. J. C. F. McCook was married twice; his first wife was Annie E. Williams of a distinguished family living in Burke Co. where her sister had married Ben Hickey. Annie E. visited this sister who had moved to Chattahoochee Co. and here met Mr. McCook, who was considered a great "catch"; for in addition to his gifts of personality his father was one of the wealthiest men in eastern part of Chattahoochee Co. Their daughter, Ella married Gilbert DeWolf, a member of another outstanding family in eastern half of the county. She died young and only Clark McCook survives as descendant of this Williams family in this part of the state and he resides in Stewart Co. A sister of Mrs. McCook and Mrs. Hickey, May Williams married Lord Gordon of England and another sister married David Blount of Waynesboro, Ga. Their brothers, Walter and John Williams lived in Augusta, Ga. Annie E. Williams McCook died when her children were small and Hon. J. C. F. McCook married Mary Ann Bagley, whose children have the unique distinction of both grandfathers being among the five commissioners appointed by Gov. Johnson in 1854 to locate site for public buildings, to purchase land or to make such other arrangements as would be advantageous to the county. Their sons and daughters grew to maturity in Chattahoochee Co., but have transplanted to other places that personal integrity and kindliness of spirit characteristic of their foreparents, and part of their splendid heritage.
