K. Rogers CHARLES BENJAMIN UNDERWOOD Charles Benjamin Underwood, the only Confederate veteran now living in Chattahoochee Co., (1932) was born June 13, 1846 in Marion County Georgia, about three miles east of old Glen Alta, where he lived until 12 years old, when his parents moved to Chattahoochee County. Their home here was bought by Rev. Zachariah Gordon in 1862, when he bought several lots of land from different people. Isaac Underwood had bought his place from Mr. Bill Willis, and when he sold to Rev. Z. Gordon, remained there as overseer. Chas. B. Unwood went back to Marion County in fall of 1863 and from there entered the army. He had a brother, John Underwood, who lived on the Marion-Chattahoochee County line, his dining room being in Marion and bedroom in Chattahoochee. Isaac Underwood married Mary Ann Kemp (sister of John Kemp) and had following children: (1) William, (2) James, (3) Charles Benjamin, (4) George, (living in Llano, Texas), (5) Elizabeth m. John Harbuck, (6) John, (7) Martha m. Matthew Hendrick, (8) Lucy (died young and she and her father, Isaac Underwood are buried on Gordon Place), (9) Mollie, m. Matthew Hendrick after the death of his first wife Martha, (living at Llano, Texas). Isaac Underwood's father, Benjamin, came from Monroe County, N. C. William and James, two oldest sons of Isaac Underwood joined Co. D, 46th Ga. Regt. and were in training in Charleston, S. C., where that regiment spent several months. Charles Benjamin Underwood was with the 6th Ga. State troops and says he did not have any training. Bill Willis was one of his officers, also G. Raiford. Mr. Underwood says, "I came back from the war to Marion County three or four miles north of Glen Alta and lived there until I married on Dec. 19, 1879, Marthina Posey (daughter of Humphrey Posey) born May 12, 1846. I went to Taylor County in 1884 and lived there 1885, '86, and '87; then moved back to Chattahoochee County near County Line where I lived one year. Then moved to the place where I now live, and have lived here continuously ever since. I still attend to the mill on my place known as Underwood's mill, which grist mill I built myself. There was formerly an old rice mill here that belonged to Mr. John Pate." Mr. Underwood continued, "I heard Rev. Zachariah Gordon preach near Green Hill Rev. W. G. Wilkinson was the first man I ever heard preach at County Line, where I was first a member of the church. My mother was a member there as far back as I remember. I think my mother first joined at old Ramah Church in Marion County and then moved her membership to Mt. Olive in Cusseta. Then she took her leter from Mt. Olive back to County Line. I later moved my membership to Mt. Paran." Mr. Underwood also says, "We used to make trips to town (Columbus) and when night came on we camped and took the frame off the wagon, put it on the ground and slept under it to keep dry. In those days each family had at least one loom and members of the family after supper carded and spun; each child being given a task and each having to spin a broach. In our family there were not enough girls, so the boys helped and I have carded many a roll and spun many a yard of cloth." Mr. Underwood says his neighbors were John Pate, Thomas Robinson, Andrew Grissom and John Sizemore. Children of Charles Benjamin and Marthinia Posey Underwood: (1) William Underwood, m. Mittie Grissom, (2) Mary Elizabeth, m. Charles O'Pry, (3) James M. m. Carrie Edwards, (4) Charles Luther, m. Ethel O'Pry, (5) John Rufus, unmarried, (6) Beulah, m. William Curlee.
