ZION MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH Present Mt. Zion Church located in northeastern part of the county was reorganized in 1883; charter members: Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Fielder, Sol Thomson, Lon Fielder, Mr. and Mrs. John W. McMurrain, Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Greer, Mrs. Boynton and Richard Jones. John W. McMurrain, one of the most highly valued members, who by his liberality had made possible the erection of this church died Dec. 28, 1883. He was born in Bibb County, Georgia Jan. 16, 1822 and married Mary Ann Motley in Muscogee County in 1845. His pastor W. P. Allison and the Clerk of the church, W. P. Fielder paid tribute to his benevolence and the great loss sustained by this church in his death. Any one may read their appreciation of his worth found in the church records of Mt. Zion. Names of other pastors serving during the half century of its existence: Revs. G. W. Weekly, M. Page, H. H. E. Hawkins, B. S. Rayley, J. Barswell, M. Greer, Lucius H. Crenshaw, A. S: McMahon, Will Peed, J. T. Flournoy, J. L. Whitley, J. H. Stanford. Present membership: Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Pope, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Harris, Mrs. Lizzie Pope Tyler, Mrs. Ruby Pope Weaver, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Pope, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Weed, Mrs. Fannie Morgan, J. F. Chastain, Robert Brown, Mr. and Mrs Frank Melton, Clarence and Clyde Melton, Mrs. Lizzie McWhorter, Mrs. Eva McClung, Mrs. J. A. Tyler, Fred and Ralph Pope, Mrs. Mamie Dalton, Mrs. Fred Johnson, Rev. and Mrs. J. H. Stanford, Mrs. C. J. Harbuck, Lois and James Harbuck, Homer Perkins, Rev. and Mrs. Robert Weed. Church statistics show that Mt. Zion was first organized in 1834. In 1905 S. A. McMahon was pastor; A. R. Pope was clerk. County Line Primitive Baptist Church, is east of Mt. Zion, and three miles distant near Pine Knot Springs a M. E. Chapel was establshed, and used by Primtive Baptists. On this highway three miles west is Mt. Paran, moved from its original location, given by James M. Cook in 1839, when all the territory surrounding its first site became part of Fort Benning reservation in 1918.
