A. Brannon from Records being compiled for "Greene Book" This family descended from Alfred the Great, King of England. They remain in royal line for several hundred years. Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, was one of the Magna Charter Barrons who wrested from King John on the Field of Runnemeade in 1236 the Great Charter. Sir Henry de Greene was Lord Chief Justice of England in 1553. His granddaughter, Catherine Parr, dau. of Sir Thomas Parr, was the, sixth wife of Henry the Eighth. Robert Greene, Gentleman, of Bowridge Hill, Gillingham, Dorsetshire England taxed on the Subsidy Rolls of Henry VIII 1547, Elizabeth 1558. Date of birth and death unknown. Richard Greene of Bowridge Hill England, second son of Robt., d. May 1608. His only son Richard Greene of Bowridge England m. Mary Hooker, dau. of John Hooker, member of Parliament from Exter. Their fourth son John Greene, (surgeon), of Salisbury, Co. of Wilkes, born 1590, m. Nov. 1619 Jeanne Tattershall, d. Jan. 1659; sailed from South Hampton on April 16. 1635, on ship James, landed in Boston June 3, 1635, settled in Salem. Driven out by religious persecution, he followed Roger Williams in 1637 into Rhode Island and was one of the original twelve proprietors of Providence. He founded Warwick, R. I. 1643. He was Magistrate, Asst. Member of Town Council, Representative in Assembly. June 21, 1625; m. first Deliverance Potter 1658; m. second Elizabeth Anthony 1665. 5th—Thomas b. June 4, 1628; d. June 15, 1717; m. Elizabeth Barton 1659. 6th—Jane b. Oct. 3, 1620; m. John Hade. 7th—Mary b. May 19, 1633; m. 1654 James Sweet (Bone-Setter). James .Greene, fourth son of John the Emigrant, was Assistant Pres. of the Colony of Rhode Island. He d. April 27, 1698. First wife Deliverance, b. in 1637; d. in 1664, was dau. of Robert Potter; three ch. Second wife Elizabeth, daug. of John and Susan Anthony, had five ch., viz. Peter, Jabez (Grandfather of Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Greene of the Revolution), David, John, and Elizabeth. John, grandson of Emigrant John, b. 1671; m. Miss Allen: emigrated to Sussex County, Va., 1699. Peter, son of John, b. in Rhode Island, m. Miss Miles of Connecticut. Peter, son of Peter, b. 1725; d. Oct. 20, 1807; m. 1750 Judith Love, dau. of Allen Love, b. Oct. 1727. Both died in Hancock Co., Ga. He served in the Revolution as a soldier in the ranks. (Proof in possession of Greene family). On Oct. 31, 1759, Peter Greene, Jr., received a Land Patent for eleven hundred acres lying in Sussex Co. Va., on both sides of Southwestern Swamp (book 33-p. 660-1756). Peter Greene was a large land owner and possessed slaves. He lived in Brunswick County during the Revolution. ISSUE 1st—James b. 1751; d. Jan. 5, 1806; m. June 3, 1853; m. 1st EHzabeht Hunt, dau. of Captain Judkins Hunt of the Revolution; m. 2nd Nancy Bass in Baldwin Co. Ga.; m. 3rd Mrs. McGhee. Rev. Miles Greene was converted n 1787, joined the Methodist Church, traveled the Brunswick Circuit in 1791. He was sent by the Va. Conference as Presiding Elder over N. C., S. G., and Ga., when they were in one circuit. He would ride hundreds of miles on horseback between his churches. He was prominent in the early church of Georgia along with Asbury Hill, Lovick Pierce and others. For twenty years he was Clerk of the Court in Baldwin Co. Ga., living in Milledgeville. Afterwards he rejoined the Methodist Conference and was a member at the first Convention in Macon in 1836 (See Geo. Smith's History of Southern Methodism). Myles Greene Jr. (third son of Rev. Myles Greene) who lived in Chattahoochee Co., b. in Baldwin Co. Ga., June 6, 1801, d. in Harris Co. Ga. March 3, 1884 (buried at Jamestown, Chattahoochee Co.), m. 1st Martha Wyche Jackson; b. Dec. 14, 1809, m. Feb. 17, 1826; d. Sept. 1, 1859. Ch. of Myles and Martha W. Martha Turner Bass April 17, 1860; was killed (accidentally) Nov. 27, 1860; one dau. Martha Stephen (Stephie) Greene b. Feb. 16, 1861. Peter A. Greene (7) b. 1838 in Harris Co. Ga., d. Nov. 23, 1903 at Columbus, Ga., m. 1st Sallie Bettie Wharton Feb. 8. 1864; m. 2nd in 1866 (Mrs.) Martha Turner Bass Greene who d. July, 1902 and is buried at Seale, Ala. Martha Stephie Greene m. Mrs. William Sapp, dau. of Abner and Antoinette (Greene) Smith says her maternal grandfathHer was Alex B. Greene who m. Rebecca H. Hughes. Mrs. Lucy Dozier, mother of Mrs. Martha Jackson Greene, and Mrs. Susan Jackson Redding, was Lucy Myrick b. Jan. 28, 1782, d. Apr. 10, 1859; m. 1st Drury Jackson Oct. 25, 1805; m. 2nd Stephen Clements; m. 3rd Richard Dozier. According to a record furnished by Thomas Greene, the third wife of his father, Myles Greene, was married six times and was Mrs. A. W. Redding, widow of that Anderson W. Redding, who married 1st Susan R. Jackson, sister of the first wife of Myles Greene, when she became the wife of Myles Greene. She was Jane ____; m. 1st ______ Snyder; 2nd ______ Brawner; 3rd Oglesby; 4th _____Rutledge; 5th A. W. Redding; 6th Myles Greene. This lady who was married six times had no children, but it is said there were children in all the homes she entered after her first marriage, that all were devoted to her and that she was a welcome visitor in any of their homes even unto the second and third generation. Mrs. Sallie Calhoun McGlaun (when a child) recalls seeing Mrs. Jane Greene in Harris Co. She remembers her as a dainty, charming old lady.
