James Johnson, a Representative from Georgia; born in Robesin Co., N. C., Feb. 12, 1811; was graduated from the University of Georgia at Athens in 1832; taught school; studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1835, and commenced practice in Columbus, Ga., in 1836; appointed Prov. Gov. of Ga. .in 1865; presidential elector on the Republican ticket of Grant and Colfax in 1868; judge of the Superior Court of Georgia from July 1, 1869, until Oct. 1, 1875; d. on his plantation in Chattahoochee Co., Ga. Data furnished by Albert Edward, a grandson of Judge Jas. Johnson, who is one of the county's most prominent citizens and lives on the plantation where his grandfather died. James Johnson b. Lula Wooldridge Aug. 19, 1916, 4 ch. viz: Lula Evelyn, Martha Josephine, Mildred Kate and Albert Lewis II; Annie Kate b. Oct. 19, 1889; d. Jan. 6. 1920; James Elmer b. Oct. 23, 1891, m. Georgiana Smith Sept. 4, 1918; Albert Ellene b. June 27, 1894, m. Fee Bivins Sept. 7, 1915, 3 ch.: Katherine Elizabeth, James Fee, Winifred Ann. (Mrs.) Katie Anderson Johnson m. 2nd David Crockett Gordy Sept. 24, 1896. One son, David Crockett Gordy Jr., b. July 27, 1897; d. Aug. 19, 1926, m. Ida Ruth McMurrain, dau. Amelie Gordy. Another of Judge Johnson's sons, Walter H. Johnson, spent as much time in Chattahoochee Co. as could be spared from official duties as Postmaster at Columbus, Ga. and U. S. Marshal for Northern District of Ga. (for about 16 years). Walter Henry Johnson m. Florence Verstille Jan. 23, 1877.
