The Weems family is of Scotch descent. The name is a variant of the ancient Fifeshire name Wemyss. In 1239 is was called Wemyss. Derived from the Gaelic word "wamls" pronounced Weem, "a cave". The name is derived from the parish of the name, appropriately so called from the number of caves on the seashore there. The ancestor of the Earl of Wemyss was styled: "Jan Mohr Nun Wamls", meaning "John of the cave." The Weems family is descended from the great Thane of Fife, who was Hugh, 2nd son of Gillemichael, who was Earl of Fife. The Wemyss are of the same descent as the Earl of McDuff. LINEAGE OF THE WEEMS FAMILY The territory, or "schire" of Wemyss on the north side of the Firth of Forth derived its name from the caves in its rocky coast, the walls of which are sculptured with the work of early Christian missionaries to whom they gave shelter. Michael of Wemyss and Mitchel died in 12G2 and left his land in the possession of his son Sir John Wemyss who was living in 1233 and died in 1263. Sir David Wemyss, grandson of Sir John was one of the ambassadors sent by the king of Norway in 1290 with Sir Mitchel Scott to bring home the princess Margaret on the death of Alexander 3rd. Sir John Wemyss of the 15th century fought under Ar-ran at Pinkie, 10th of Sept., 1546, and at Langside for Mary Queen of Scot on 13th of May 1568. Sir John Wemyss was 1st. Earl of Wemyss and was created a baronet of Wood Scoted 29th of May 1625, and elevated to the peerage of Scotland as lord Wemyss of Elco, April 1st, 1628. His lordship was advanced to the dignities of Earl of Wemyss, Lord Elcho and Mitchil June 25th, 1633. He married Sept. 1609, Jane, daughter of Patrick, 6th Lord Gray. Died Nov. 22, 1649 and was succeeded by his only surviving son, David, 2nd Earl of Wemyss. Coming to America, the Wemyss, (Weems), settled at Port Tobasco, Charles Co. Maryland. David Weems of America married Esther Hill. Rev. John Weems the 4th son who was an Episcopal Minister for more than 30 years at Port Tabasco, Md., was first cousin of the celebrated Rev. Mason Lock Weems. Rev. John Weems was born in 1764; married Elizabeth Smoot. There were seven sons and one daughter. Lock Weems the 7th son was born at Port Tobasco, July 25, 1804. He was a planter, first at Washington, Ga., later moving to Columbus, Ga., where he owned land now contained in surburbs of the city. He m. 1st Eugenia Long of Marianna, Fla., and had one son, William Junious. He married 2nd. Mariah Felixina Shepherd, daughter of Andrew and Mary (Hillhouse) Shepherd. Felix Ina Shepherd and Lock Weems were married at Washington, Ga., by Rev. Dr. Hoyt, July 1830. She d. at Columbus, Ga., May 18, 1850, aged 37. He died at Columbus, Ga., Aug. 25, 1853, aged 49. WAR RECORD A halo of romance encircled the memory of this handsome and brave young man who entered the Confederate service at the opening of the Civil War. He was adjutant of the 15th Alabama Regiment a few months and then elected Captain of Company A., Stonewall Jackson's Corps. He fell mortally wounded at the head of his men at the battle of Malvern Hill, and died July 10, 1862, just after his wife reached his bedside. One child was born to him, a daughter who died just before her wedding day. She was called the child of the 15th Alabama Regiment.
