Foster was born in Gwinnett County, Georgia, November 1, 1834. He came to Calhoun in 1856 and carried on a profitable business as a dealer in hardware. Later, with Judge James M. Harlan, a prominent citizen of Gordon County at this time, he established under the firm name of Foster and Harlan the leading department store in Calhoun, north corner of Wall and Court streets, on the present site of the Harrell building. Judge Foster served as Justice of the Inferior Court of this county from 1860 until the abolishment of the court in 1868. He was a prominent Mason, a Knight of Honor, and a member of the Methodist Church. He married Miss Sue Garlington, of an influential Gordon County family. Their children are: Oswald, Mary E., Florrie, all of whom died in early life, and Fall, also deceased, who married Miss Clara Weber. Judge Foster died September 17, 1881. His grave is in Chandler Cemetery.
