Smith, Jr., 83, Lyerly, died Saturday at Beverly Health Care in Rome. Mr. Smith was born March 21, 1922, in Lyerly, the son of the late William Henry Sr. and Elizabeth Maxwell Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lyerly. His grandfather, the Rev. James Monroe Smith was the first pastor of the First Baptist Church of Lyerly. W. H. was owner and operator of Smith Printing Company. He was a retired fire chief of the Lyerly Fire Department, a member of the Civil Defense and recording secretary of Lyerly Cemetery. He was a veteran of the US Army, having served in WWII. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Catherine Green Smith, a son, William Randall Smith, Subligna, a daughter Patricia A. Smith-Tantillo, Jacksonville, Fla, two sisters, Vera Hillis, Humble, Texas, and Margaret Webb, Kennesaw, Ga. A granddaughter, Laura Smith Outler and one great grandson, Gavin Outler. Funeral services were held at 2 PM Monday from the First Baptist Church with the Rev. J. B. Cantrell and Dr. James Baird officiating. Interment in Lyerly Cemetery. Active pallbearers Mike Woodard, Randy Rush, Joe Pullen, Frank Cranmore, Jimmy Taylor and Billy Bryant.
