While engaged in killing hogs a young farmer named James Starling, attempted to throw a dead porker into a barrel of boiling water used for scalding. He missed his footing and fell head foremost into the seething water. When discovered only his feet were protruding from the barrel, and the unfortunate man had been boiled alive. His body presented a sickening spectacle.
