After an illness of only 5 days, Rev. Smith, mayor of Lyerly and one of the best known and most beloved citizens of this section, passed away quietly on Friday last (June 6, 1924). Mr. Smith was happily married to Nancy Eletha Bain, who passed away six weeks prior to his passing.He was an ordained Baptist minister and for forty-odd years was one of the most active minister in this section and it was through his efforts that many of the leading Baptist churches were organized, including the Baptist church of Lyerly where he served as minister. Survived by 2 daughter, 4 sons, and 2 brothers. "Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers." Proverbs 17:6.
