Company F, 28th Regiment
Cherokee County
"Cherokee Georgia Mountaineers"

This company was originally known as Company M, 18th
Regiment Georgia Infantry It was formed in part of
Captain Jesse Burtz's Independent Company of Georgia
Infantry November 13, 1861. It had on its original
roll probably 176 men. It was composed of men from
four counties, Cherokee, Pickens, Forsyth and
Dawson. Before being mustered into service at
Richmond, Virginia, being too large for one company,
it was divided, retaining in the original company,
under Captain Burtz, the men from Cherokee and
Pickens counties, while the men from Forsyth and
Dawson counties were formed in a new company. See

Anderson, Isaac -- Private - March 4, 1862. On rolls
from August 31, to December 31, 1862, he was
reported "`Absent, sent off from Yorktown; not heard
of since."

Anderson, John F. -- Private - July 22, 1861.
Appointed 2nd Sergeant. Roll for December 31, 1863,
last on file, shows him present. Died in service.
Buried in Hollywood Cemetery at Richmond, Virginia

Baber, James -- Private - July 22, 1861. Discharged
without pay, date not given.

Bearden, William J. -- Private - July 22, 1861. Died
at Richmond, Virginia October 11, 1861.

Biddy, L. W. -- Private - July 22, 1861. Killed at
Battery Wagner, South Carolina September 3, 1863.

Boling, Floyd T. -- Private - July 22, 1861. Died in
Richmond, Virginia hospital, date not given.

Boling, H. C. -- 2nd Sergeant - July 22, 1861.
Elected Jr. 2nd Lieutenant August 9, 1862; 2nd
Lieutenant November 3, 1862; 1st Lieutenant October
20, 1863. Surrendered, Greensboro, North Carolina
April 26, 1865.

Bone, C. M. -- Private - in 1862. Wounded in eye,
resulting in loss of sight, June 28, 1863.

Brown, William J. -- Private - March 9, 1863.
Surrendered, Greensboro, North Carolina April 26,
1865.

Burtz, Jesse M. -- Captain - July 22, 1861.
Resigned, on account of chronic diarrhoea resulting
from measles, April 21, 1862.

Causey, C. L. -- Private - in 1862. Captured April
1865.

Colbert, Alfred M. -- Enlisted as a private in
Company F, 20th Regiment Georgia Infantry July 6,
1861. Transferred to Company F, 28th Regiment
Georgia Infantry in 1862 or 1863. Deserted in 1863.
Took oath of allegiance to U.S. Government at
Chattanooga, Tennessee February 14, 1864.

Coleman, Jeremiah -- Private - 1863. Captured at
Department Headquarters Bermuda Hundred, Virginia
December 17, 1864. Took oath of allegiance to U.S.
Government and furnished transportation to
Indianapolis, Indiana December 21, 1864.

Conn, Francis M. -- Private - July 22, 1861.
Appointed 1st Sergeant, Discharged, disability, June
21, 1862.

Eaton, A. J. -- Private - July 22, 1861. Roll for
December 31, 1863, last on file, shows him present.

Evans, G. S. -- Private - March 4, 1862. Wounded in
1862. Roll for December 31, 1863, last on file,
shows him on sick furlough. No later record.

Freeman, William Theodore -- 4th Corporal - July 22,
1861. Wounded through left arm and breast, at South
Mountain, Maryland September 12, 1862. Surrendered,
Greensboro, North Carolina April 26, 1865. Died from
effects of wounds June 8, 1836.

Garrett, Asa C. -- Private - February 27, 1863.
Wounded in leg, necessitating amputation, at
Bentonville, North Carolina March 19, 1865. Paroled
at General Hospital, Thomasville, North Carolina May
1, 1865. (Resident of Georgia since December 1,
1855.)

Gibson, William T. -- Private - March 4, 1862.
Wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland September 17, 1862.
Took oath of allegiance to U.S. Government at
Chattanooga, Tennessee July 14, 1864.

Gilliland, S J. -- Private - July 22, 1861. Wounded
at Seven Pines, Virginia May 31, 1862. Roll for
December 31, 1863, last on file, shows him absent,
wounded. No later record.

Hall, P. M -- Private - March 4, 1862. Roll for
December 31, 1862, shows him "`Absent at home on
furlough, time expired." Paroled at Augusta, Georgia
May 24, 1865.

Hawkins, G. W. -- Private - July 22, 1861. Severely
wounded at Boonesboro, Maryland September 14, 1862.
Died of wounds same day.

Hazelwood, W. H. -- Private - March 9, 1863. Roll
for December 31, 1863, last on file, shows him
present. No later record.

Hembree, James D. -- Private - March 3, 1863.
Pension records show he was captured near Raleigh,
North Carolina April 1865. Paroled April 21, 1865.

1827.)

Henderson, F. M. -- Private - July 22, 1861. Roll
for December 31, 1863, last on file, shows him
present. No later record.

Henderson, James Irving -- Private - July 22, 1861.
Died of disease at Richmond, Virginia June 9, or 16,
1862.

Hogan, J. C. -- Private - July 22, 1861. Wounded at
Chancellorsville, Virginia May 3, 1863. Roll for
December 31, 1863, last on file. shows him on
wounded furlough. No later record.

Holcombe, Asa -- Private - March 9, 1863. Deserted
in 1863. Reported: "Published as a deserter-not
wanted," on roll dated June 30, 1863.

Holcombe, J. J. -- Private - July 22, 1861.
Appointed Corporal. Wounded at Seven Pines, Virginia
May 31, 1862. Reported: "Absent on wounded furlough-
time out," on roll dated December 31, 1863. No later
record.

Hood, C. W. -- Private - July 22, 1861. Wounded
through left hand, necessitating amputation of third
finger, at Cold Harbor, Virginia. June 3, 1864.
Admitted to 2nd Division Jackson Hospital at
Richmond, Virginia April 15, 1864. Wounded in right
hip near Kinston, North Carolina March 17, 1865.

1861. Killed at Seven Pines, Virginia May 31, 1862.

McCraw, G. P. (or P. N. B.) -- Private - July 22,
1861. Roll for December 31, 1863, last on file,
shows him: "Absent without leave one month and
twenty three days." No later record.

McCraw, John A. -- Private - July 22, 1861. Wounded
and captured at Chapin's Farm, Virginia September
30, 1864. Left thigh amputated in U.S.A. General
Hospital at Fortress Monroe, Virginia October 1,
1864. Released at Point Lookout, Maryland June 8,
1865.

McCraw, W. D. -- Private - July 22, 1861. Appears
without remark as to presence or absence on roll
dated August 31, 1861. Pension records show he was
wounded and permanently disabled at Ocean Pond,
Florida February 20, 1864; enlisted in Johnson’s
Regiment Georgia Militia, and was paroled at
Kingston, Georgia May 12, 1865. (Born in Cherokee
County, Georgia January 19, 1843.)
