He was sitting by the fire sharpening drawing-knife when he stopped, raised up and remarked, "this is a mighty cold day," and fell back into the chair dead. He was one of the first settlers of the county, having moved here before the Indians were driven from the county, and about the time that Maj. Louis Rhinehardt and "Uncle" Johnie Pitman did; the three were born in the year 1804, near the same time, settled in this county within three miles of each other and were always near neighbors; all raised large families, and in religion they were all Methodist. Maj. Rhinehardt and Mr. Pitman died last year and now the last of the trio has been called from earth to a home on high. He was in his eighty-second year and up to the time of his death was apparently hale and hearty and has frequently walked to town, a distance of nine miles, attended to business and returned home the same day without feeling the least fatigued. He served as Justice of the Peace for about 20 years, and during the time, it is said, an appeal was never taken from his judgement nor a case tried before him carried beyond his court. He was a respected, good citizen, attentive to his own business and leaves a host of relatives and friends who mourn his suden (sic) demise.
