Obituary 
John A. McCanless, son of Wm. M. McCanless, of Canton, was born Feb. 7th, 
1865, and departed this life Aug. 12th, 1886. 
He was a fine young man of promise, and had started out in life to make 
himself useful to his generation.
He entered school at the Etowah Institute in Canton in January with 
expectation of attending the entire year, if not longer, but about the first 
of March that most dreaded bodily disease, consumption, began its eternal and 
destructive work upon his person, after which, day by day, he grew weaker, 
until last Thursday evening, at 2 o'clock, he yielded up the ghost. 
His wasted form was conveyed to the Canton Methodist church, where a large and 
weeping crowd had congregated to pay him their last tribute of respect.  Rev. 
C. M. McClure preached a short but interesting funeral, then the pallbearers 
placed John close by his mother and one sister, who had preceded him only one 
month. 
John was not a member of the church militant, but by his upright walk and 
godly conversation and by expressing his willingness to die, we are convinced 
that he is now a member of the church triumphant. 
This dispensation of God's providence leaves Mr. McCanless with no family, 
except Teasley, his youngest son, who is now about grown.  Three years ago it 
was a happy family, with father, mother, a nd   (sic) four children, now it is 
father and son only. 
May God in his mercy bless those remaining, and lead them in the ways of 
pleasantness and peace.   J. H. J.
