He was familiarly known as "Uncle Sammie," and was one of Cherokee's oldest, best and most respected citizens. He was an Englishman and came here from "across the sea" many years ago, when the gold excitement was so high, and for many years worked the mineral interest of the county and amassed considerable property thereby. The Pasco mine, now operated upon by the Franklin & McDonald gold mining company, near Ophir, in this county, was for many years successfully worked by "Uncle Sammie." He was some seventy years or more of age, but had only a few relatives in this country. His wife preceded him to the grave some years ago. He was a useful and honored member of the masonic lodge, and was buried by that fraternity. We tender our sympathies to the bereaved in the death of "Uncle Sammie," one of Cherokee's best citizens.
