The Cherokee Advance 18 Feb 1882 p 3 
Died on last Sunday, in the Southern part of this county, Dr. David H. Payne,
about 70 years of age.  Dr. Payne was a popular and successful physician.  One
of the oldest, and most substantial citizens of the county, and a pious member
of the Methodist church.  He was the father of Hon. B. F. Payne, our fellow
citizens (sic) and State Senator. Dr. Payne will be greatly missed by the
citizens of Cherokee, and many friends mourn for him, but not as those who are
without hope.
