John was the son of Daniel McCollum (1760-1850) and the brother of William "Billy" McCollum (1789-1876). John, his wife Hannah, and their children moved from Habersham County to Cherokee County about 1845. John tried to enlist in Company B of the Cherokee Legion of teh Georgia State Guards in 1864, but was exempted from service due to age and infirmity. Five of his sons served the Confederacy during the Civil War and three died, one was wounded and the youngest served for six months at age 17 when the Cherokee Legion Cavalry was called up for home guard duty.
