   Elam Franklin Dempsey, clergyman, born in Atlanta, Ga., July 6, 1878; son of
Thomas Jackson and Narcissa America (Smith) Dempsey; A. B., Emory College (now
University), 1899; B. D., Vanderbilt, 1906; D. D., Southern University, 1915;
married Georgia Page Hunnicutt, of Atlanta, November 7, 1906. Began on trial as
junior preacher M. E. Church, South; at City Mission, Atlanta, 1899; junior
preacher Turin circuit, 1900-2; senior preacher, Lincolnton circuit, 1902-3;
student in Vanderbilt and pastor Humphrey Street church, Nashville, Tenn.,
1903-6; Dahlonega, Ga., 1906-8; Broadway, Augusta, Ga., 1908-9; Trinity,
Atlanta, Ga., 1909-10; Milledgeville, First Church, 1910-14; Dean of Theology in
Emory College, Oxford, Ga., November 1914 to January 1919; Athens, Ga., First
Church, January 1919-November 19£0; Rome, Ga., First Church, 1920-21; Secretary
of Education, North Georgia Annual Conference, 1921-23. Member of the two
general conferences of M. E. Church, South, in Atlanta, May 1918 and in Hot
Springs, Ark., May 1922. Trustee of Reinhardt and LaGrange Colleges and of Emory
University. Editor of "Wit and Wisdom of Warren Akin Candler," (in its second
edition) and of "The Life Hid With Christ in God." Constant contributor of verse
and prose to church periodicals, newspapers and reviews. Furnishes daily feature
"Sermons to Live By." A. T. 0., Mason, Democrat.
