J. Rowe WILLIAM LAMAR ERWIN Born November 29, 1886, at Athens, Georgia, son of Alexander S. and Mary Ann Lamar (Cobb) Erwin. Graduate Athens High School, 1902. Graduate University of Georgia, 1906, B.S.C.E. Was member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, Phi Kappa Literary Society, baseball team two years. Sphinx Club. Located in Clifton, Arizona, where he did civil engineering until he returned to Athens in January. 1908. He then spent a year as traveling salesman for Armour & Co., and O. R. Hinton & Co. February, 1909, he entered the University of Georgia Law School, graduating in June, 1910. During this course he was president of the Athletic Association of the University, vice-president Phi Kappa, president Jefferson Law Debating Society, and one of the founders of the Gridiron Club. Admitted to bar in 1910 and practiced law in Athens until outbreak of war with Germany. He entered the first training camp at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Ga., in May, 1917, and was commissioned First Lieutenant and assigned to the U S. R. Field Artillery on August 15, 1917, subsequently assigned to 325th Infantry, Camp Gordon, Ga., and sailed for foreign service with his regiment April 25, 1918. After four months, service, including a week at a rest camp in England, training behind the British lines in Northern France, and six weeks service in the line in Toul sector, he was returned to America for promotion and assignment to new division. Promoted to Captain of Infantry October 8, 1918, and assigned to 99th Division, Camp Wheeler, Ga. Spent two months with replacement unit and was discharged at Camp Wheeler, Ga., in December, 1918. Returning to Athens, he again took up the practice of law, and is a member of the firm of Erwin, Erwin & Nix. He is a member of the Elks, U. C. T., Masonic Chapter, Commandery and Shrine, a Knight of Pythias, and is a member of the Kiwanis Club, and a director in the Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Cloverhurst Country Club, a member of and Post Commander of the American Legion, Societe of 8 Chevaux et 40 Hommes, Army Association of U. S., and Captain of Infantry. 0. R.
