J. Rowe ANDREW COBB ERWIN Andrew Cobb Erwin, son of Judge Alexander S. Erwin and Mary Ann Lamar (Cobb) Erwin, was born in Athens, Ga., December 22, 1884. He received his education in the Athens city schools and at an early age began his career in the business world that has. been crowned with success. He entered the insurance and real estate field in 1907 and with his native ability, magnificent energy and executive power came almost immediately into prominence in business circles. At the early age of twenty-seven years he was elected president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and thus became the boosting leader of the community. Under his administration that organization accomplished much for the advancement of the city. He was an active factor in the Commercial Bank of Athens, which is now one of the most solid banking institutions in the state. He is vice-president and director of this bank. Mr. Erwin is a director in the Southern Mutual Insurance Company, one of the leading institutions of its kind in the country, and a member of the City Bond Commission. He was for a time a director in the Athens Railway and Electric Company, resigning that position when he was elected Mayor of Athens, January 1, 1918, without opposition. Mayor Erwin completed his first term as Mayor with such an admirable record that hundreds of the best citizens petitioned him to stand for re-election, and he was re-elected without opposition for another term of two years. He has at different times been connected with business movements of large interest and among other things served as one of the administrators of the estate of the late millionaire, James M. Smith. Mr. Erwin was united in marriage April 24, 1912, to Miss Camilla McWhorter, daughter of Judge and Mrs. Hamilton McWhorter. Children: Mary Cobb Erwin and Sarah Pharr Erwin.
