J. Rowe JOHN HENRY GRIFFETH John Henry Griffeth was born in Oconee County, Georgia, October 8, 1870. He is the son of Robert S. Griffeth and Sallie (Wier) Griffeth. His education was at the North Georgia Agricultural College at Dahlonega. His younger days were spent on the farm, where he developed a splendid business ability and judgment that fitted him well for the work that he was later on to take up. On coming to Athens twenty-six years ago he entered the cotton business and through the years that have intervened he has become one of the leading cotton factors of the city. He is a member of the firm of Miller & Co., and in the handling of the fleecy staple there is no more progressive man than the subject of this sketch. In the business world, Mr. Griffeth has taken a prominent position. He is vice-president and director of the Budwine Company, one of the largest soft drink manufactories in the South, and is a director in the Commercial Bank of Athens. His experience and his sound business judgment, coupled with his sterling character and his interest in civic affairs, were responsible for his election January 1, 1919, as a member of the Board of Commissioners of Roads and Revenues for Clarke County, in which position he is rendering his people conspicuous service. He was elected to the chairmanship of the board in 1920 and 1923. Mr. Griffeth is a member of the Baptist Church and of the Elks. In May 1891 Mr. Griffeth was married to Miss Mary Cooper, of Monroe, Ga. Children: H. G. Griffeth, R. V. Griffeth, and Lucile Griffeth. In June, 1904, Mr. Griffeth was married again, his second wife being Miss Lillian Branch, of Greensboro. Ga. Children: Helen and Mildred.
