J. Rowe DR. E. L. HILL Eugene Lott, Hill was born in Montgomery, Ala., on August 2, 1878; and is the son of Rev. Luther L. Hill and Laura Groom Hill. His primary education was pursued under the direction of Prof. Geo. W. Thomas, who conducted a boys' school in Montgomery for more than fifty years. In 1895 he stood the entrance examination for Princeton College, but loyalty to Southern institutions turned his course to the Southwestern Presbyterian University, at Clarkesville, Tenn.; and from this institution he received the A.B. degree in 1897. During the winter of 1897 and 1898 he taught Latin and Greek in the Hammer Hall Preparatory School for Boys in Montgomery, Ala.; and entered the Seminary in the fall of 1898, where he studied under the great theologian, Dr. R. A. Webb, and received the B.D. degree in June, 1900. Having been licensed by the Presbytery of East Alabama, he took charge of the church at West Point, Ga., and after one year was called to the church at Eufaula, Ala., where he spent five of the most successful years of his life; and was called from Eufaula to the First Presbyterian Church .of Athens in February, 1907. In 1904 he toured Palestine, Egypt and Europe. In 1904 he was married to Miss Annie Graham, of Montgomery, Ala., who has ever been an inspiration and help to him. He holds the A.M. degree from the University of Georgia and the D. D. degree from his alma mater. He has moderated the Synod of Georgia; and served as chairman of its Executive Committee of Synod's Work. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Davidson College and Columbia Seminary; and is a member of the Assembly's Executive Committee of Home Missions and the Advisory Board of its Committee on Christian Education. He was called to the professorship of Hebrew in the Seminary and to the pastorates of influential churches in Dallas, Texas, Memphis, Tenn., Birmingham, Ala., and other cities; but Athens has won his heart and he has declined to leave. He has preached the baccalaureate sermons at the University of Georgia in 1920, the State Normal School in 1907, and the Lucy Cobb Institute in 1908. He has delivered his series of lectures on "Stewardship" at all the Seminaries in the Southern Presbyterian Church, at the three conference grounds of the Assembly, and in eight different states. His work as pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Athens is spoken of by Dr. Bishop in his history of the church. Additional Comments: From: HISTORY OF ATHENS and CLARKE COUNTY 1923 H. J.
