J. Rowe WALTER EDWARD JACKSON Born September 23, 1877, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, the son of John F. Jackson and Mattie (Jarrell) Jackson. Coming to Athens as a boy of ten years of age, his early educational training was obtained in the public schools of Athens. He farmed until May, 1898, when at the age of twenty he enlisted in the army of the United States for service in the Spanish-American War. He was assigned to Company G, 2nd Georgia Regiment in camp at Griffin, later at Tampa, and Huntsville, Ala., and at the close of the war was mustered out in Atlanta, Ga., the regiment to which he was attached not having participated in any engagements. He returned to Athens and again took up farming. He enlisted in the local company of State Militia, and was elected First Lieutenant, resigning this office when he was elected sheriff in 1908. In 1900 he was elected to the police force of the city of Athens, and served in the department until 1907. In January, 1908, he was elected sheriff of Clarke County, Georgia, to fill the unexpired term of Captain John W. Wier, deceased, and served until the regular term in 1909, when he was re-elected to succeed himself and has been successively re-elected each term; discharging the duties of the office with efficient service and entire satisfaction up to the present time. Should he offer for re-election at the end of this term, undoubtedly he will be returned. During the World War, in addition to his official duties as Sheriff and Chairman of the Local Registration Board of the Draft Service, he was active in the aid of the various loan drives and other war work. He received his honorable discharge from this service on March 31, 1919. He is a member of the Aithens Kiwanis and the Cloverhurst Country Club, Elks, Knights of Pythias, Odd Fellows, and a Chapter Mason. He has for fifteen years been an active member of the Young Men's Christian Association, and is a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Athens. He was married in October, 1915, to Miss Ruth Angier, of Atlanta, Ga., and they have a daughter, Ruth Angier Jackson, age six years. His residence address is 1297 Milledge Avenue, Athens, Ga.
