J. Rowe JOHN WILLIAM JARRELL, JR. Born near Lexington, Oglethorpe County, Georgia, December 24, 1879. Reared in country; first attended school in old log school house near Mt. Pleasant Church, and later in five other localities in county. At 18 became interested in developing telephone communication in rural sections and devoted three years service without charge to efforts in Oglethorpe and Madison counties. Entered service of Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company at Athens July 8, 1901, as collector under late. H. C. Conway. Promoted to bookkeeper and cashier, later succeeding Mr. Conway as district manager over thirteen counties in May 1913. On July 8, 1923, completed, twenty-two years service with Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company in Athens. Many great improvements in the service and system have been made here at the instance of his suggestions, and much work in educating all co-workers and the public to the proper use and best service that can be given has been done by him. He is a member of First Methodist Church, and is on the board of stewards; member of Mt. Vernon No. 22, F. & A. M.; Keystone Chapter No. 1; Godfrey de Bouillon No. 14, K. T.; and Rotary Club. He served as departmental superintendent senior department of Sunday School. Past president of Chamber of Commerce, and was active in all war campaign work. Was associate member State Council on Food Production under appointment of Governor Nat E. Harris, April 16, 1917. Served on all campaigns Liberty Bonds, Red Cross, Y. M. C. A., and the Salvation Army for war purposes as well as those of local interest. Married December 25, 1912, Sadie Murray, daughter late I. V. Murray, grand-daughter late Thos. Bailey.
