J. Rowe JERE M. POUND Among the leading educators of the state and the South is President Jere M. Pound, of the State Normal School. He was born March 23, 1864, the son of E. T. Pound and Elizabeth (Bloodworth) Pound. He received his early education at Gordon Institute and was graduated from the University of Georgia in 1884 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. He had prepared himself for the law but never practiced and at once entered the teaching profession, starting as a teacher in Means' High School in 1884. In 1885 he went to Fort Valley Male and Female High School; 1888 he was called to the presidency of Gordon Institute, one of the leading preparatory schools of the South. In that position he served nine years and the impress he left upon hundreds of young Georgians was of an abiding nature. Under his direction the institution grew as it had never before grown and its graduates owed much of their development along the soundest educational lines to him. He was a director of the Pedagogical Department G. N. & I. School at Milledgeville in 1897, and was recalled to the presidency of Gordon Institute in 1898, where he remained three years. In 1901 he became superintendent of the Macon city and Bibb county schools. After three years service there he became superintendent of the East Florida Seminary. In 1908 he was appointed and later elected as State School Commissioner of Georgia, a position he filled with signal ability. In 1910 he resigned to return again to Gordon Institute as its president. Later on he was elected president of the State Normal School and in that position has served for the past nine years. It would be difficult to estimate the value of the services of this great educator to the state of Georgia and to the South. Of especial value has been his work as president of the State Normal School where every year he has the direction of the education of nearly a thousand young women. Dr. Pound is a member of the Methodist Church and is one of the most active laymen of that denomination. He has been a member of each annual conference for a number of years and of two general confereces and rendered invaluable service by his wise counsel and advice. He was married in 1890 to Miss Ada Murphey. Children: Willie Green, Murphey, Jere M. Jr., Merritt, Ida, Aldine, Lucy Floyd and Stokely.
