J. Rowe JEPTHA A. RUCKER Born November 2, 1846, at Farm Hill, Elbert County, Ga. Moved, to Athens in 1856, and attended A. M. Scudder's School for Boys two years; then went to the Boys' School at Rock College (now the State Normal School.) Was appointed cadet at the Georgia Military Institute at Marietta by Governor Joseph E. Brown, and was sworn into the Confederate Army in the famous Battalion of Cadets, just one month before he was seventeen years of age. He served through the siege of Atlanta and was forced .back upon Savannah by Sherman on his march through Georgia. Surrendered with the Confederate forces when Richmond fell. Returning to Athens, he entered Franklin College and graduated in the notable class of 1868. He has the distinction of being the captain of the University of Georgia's first baseball team, and has always taken a great interest in college athletics. He engaged in the cotton export trade, and in the ginning and compress business. Mr. Rucker has served as Mayor of Athens three times, and has been Alderman from the Third ward four terms. He is now serving in that capacity. He was a member of the General Assembly in the lower house in 1904. His residence address is 328 Dearing street, Athens, Ga.
