J. Rowe IN MEMORIAM MAJOR JOHN E. TALMADGE was born November 3, 1848; died January 20, 1921. At the age of 16 he ran away from home and enlisted in Wheeler's Calvary and was made a courier boy in General Hannan's brigade. Later he joined Company D under Col. Andrew Young, serving throughout the war. He returned after the close of the war and entered business with his brother, the late Capt. C. G. Talmadge, the firm being known as Talmadge Bros. Later the firm was merged with Hodgson Bros., and for a number of years the large wholesale grocery business was conducted under the style name and firm as Talmadge-Hodgson Co. Some years later this firm dissolved and Major Talmadge and Captain Talmadge reorganized under the name of Talmadge Bros. & Co., which firm is now operating one of the largest wholesale groceries in the South. Major Talmadge was a member of Cobb-DeLoney Camp Confederate Veterans and for several terms was the commander of the camp. He took a great interest in the cause of the Confederacy and never lost an opportunity of helping old and deserving veterans. He never allowed one of them to miss a trip to the conventions held throughout the country. His money paid their expenses and he saw to it that they were properly cared for. Major Talmadge was one of the leading citizens of this community. He spent his life for the upbuilding of the city and helping to make a better citizenship and encouraging every one to live a better life. He was a model citizen and his life was an exemplary one. His first marriage was to Miss Elizabeth Dorsey, of Athens, from which union the following children were born: C. A., Daisy, John E., Coke G., and Julius Y. His second wife, who survives him, was Miss Letia Montgomery, of Jackson County. Messrs. C. A., John E., Coke G., and Julius Y. Talmadge are the members of the firm of Talmadge Bros. & Co., the firm which was built and so successfully managed by Major John E. Talmadge.
