J. Rowe WILLIAM JUDSON THORNTON William Judson Thornton, Recorder for the City of Athens, Ga., 1919-23 (to date of this sketch) was born September 11, 1850, near Watkinsville, in a section of Clarke County that later was cut off into the present limits of Oconee County. His father, W. A. Thornton, was one of ten brothers who served in the Confederate Army in the War between the States. His mother was, before her marriage, Sarah Haygood, an aunt of Bishop Haygood and Miss Laura Haygood, a missionary to China. As was the case with many other boys and young men during the reconstruction period, he was deprived of a university education, but received training from two excellent educators of that day at the Watkinsville Academy. Many citizens of the state remember the kind but firm tutelage of Mr. Tom Murray and Miss Laura Fewell. When a very young man, Mr. Thornton married Miss Rebecca Jackson, daughter of A. B. Jackson, member of a committee who wrote the Constitution of the State of Georgia. Mr. and Mrs. Thornton celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1921 at a reception given in their honor by their seven children. Residence address, 220 Oakland Avenue, Athens, Ga.
