J. Rowe HUGH WELCH WHITE Prominent as a farmer, manufacturer, banker and civic official, Hugh Welch White stands among the ablest and most successful young men of Clarke County. He was born at Whitehall, Clarke County, Georgia, September 6, 1888, the son of John Richards White and Lilly (Paine) White. He attended the University of Georgia, class of 1909. Immediately after leaving college he associated himself with his father in the management of the Georgia Manufacturing Company and the Whitehall Yarn Mill, two of the most successful cotton mills in the South. He was elected president of the latter corporation in 1919. Mr. White is one of the large and successful farmers in the state. His interest in agriculture and the agricultural development of Georgia is intense. He is also vitally interested in banking and is a director of the National Bank of Athens. His marked ability has brought success to his efforts as farmer, manufacturer and banker. He is keenly interested in civic affairs and every movement for the betterment of the community receives his active and energetic support. He has served for a number of years as a member of the Board of Commissioners of Roads and Revenues for Clarke County, a body charged with the management of the financial affairs of this wealthy and prosperous county. In 1915 he was chosen as chairman of that body, a position he filled with much ability. He is the youngest man in Georgia to have held that responsible position. He is now a member of this board. He is president of the Cloverhurst Country Club, president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Masonic lodge, a member of the Elks Club, and a Rotarian. Although many of his interests are in Athens, Mr. White resides at Whitehall, near the two great mills and close to his large farms. He was married January 5, 1912, to Miss Ruth Beymer. Children: Bernice Beymer, Hugh Welch, Jr., Walter Beymer, John Richard, and Robert Frances. Additional Comments: From: HISTORY OF ATHENS and CLARKE COUNTY 1923 H. J.
