J. Rowe JOEL A. WIER Joel A. Wier is one of the leading young business men of Athens. Born in Abbeville, S. C., October 27, 1883, the son of Joel C. Wier and Lillie (Burns) Wier. His early educational training was acquired in the public schools, and he graduated from Clemson College, Clemson, S. C., in 1904, with the degree of B.S. in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. His electrical apprenticeship was served with the Westinghouse Electrical & Manufacturing Company, Pittsburg, Pa., and the Allis-Chalmers Company at .Cincinnati. He was with the Arthur Frantzen Company, of Mexico City, Mexico, from January 1907 to July 1908, when he came to Athens, Georgia, and organized the Athens Engineering Company. He has been at the head of this company since its establishment and its successful business operation throughout the years is a tribute to his executive and business ability. Mr. Wier is chairman of the board of governors of the Kiwanis Club, is vice-president and director of the Cloverhurst Country Club; is an Elk, Knight of Pythias, and member of the Chamber of 'Commerce. He is a member of the board of deacons in the First Presbyterian Church, and member of Y. M. C. A. During the World War he was county chairman of War Work, assisted in all Liberty Loan campaigns, Red Cross, Y. M. C. A., Salvation Army and Y. W. C. A. campaigns. June 12, 1912, he was married to Miss Rosena Thomas, of Athens, Georgia. Children: Joel Wier, Jr., Elizabeth and George Dudley Thomas Wier. Residence address, 1080 Milledge Avenue.
