Bowers Lanehunter@aol.com GRAVE TRANSCRIPTIONS of Occeane Cemetery in Athens, Clark Co., GA- Burwell POPE- Monument erected- "Erected to the memory of General Burwell POPE b. Sep. 8, 1790, departed this life May 11, 1840." (Other writting I cannot decifer) Marker in front of it, which says... "NSUSD In Honor of Service of the war of 1812, Burwell POPE." "Sarah Key Relic of Burwell POPE, dau. of Charles and Sarah Strong. b. July 15 1795, d. July 28, 1822. She Rests in Jesus." "In memory of Charles B. POPE son of Gen. B. and Sarah K. POPE, b. March 7, 1822, departed this life Oct. 23, 1839 in Memory of the Softmore Clan of the University of GA. Think of me as a wanderer who's home is found." "Benjamin H. POPE Dec. 19, 1830 d. Nov. 22, 1898. (In front of his marker it says "CSA" ) "Alexander Franklin POPE June 5, 1829 - Feb 24, 1910. Son of Sarah K. Strong and Burwell POPE. 1st Lt. Troop Artillary GA , Volunteer Capt. and Ordinance officer, Staff of Gen. Howell Company member of GA Legislator from Oglethorpe Co., 1877, 1890, 1891." The two following graves did not have last names on them but were in the POPE PLOT..... "Edwin 1877-1884" "Clara 1874-1884" (Then right next to them.....) "EDWADS, Austin Southwick - March 2, 1885 - March 2, 1976, Marion POPE March 27,1889 - March 8, 1979." "Mattie Wiley Nov. 14, 1855 - Jan 3, 1936 - John Edwin POPE June 18, 1847 - June 9, 1898." "Henry Louis POPE b. Feb 16 1886- Dec 7, 1960." "Rose MCAFEE b. June 12, 1900- d. Dec. 18, 1979" (Next to Henry Louis POPE) "Paulette M. POPE - Dearest Moma - d. 1998" "Rosemary POPE- b. 1947- "(hasn't died yet, her marker is next to Paulette M. POPE). "Cadesman POPE- GA. Lt. Co. E. 328 Inf., WWI Feb. 6, 1893- Jan 18, 1971."
