Wilkins, president, and W. M. Stephenson, cashier, in the building on Broad Street now occupied by the Broad Street Office of the American State Bank. It was organized with a capital stock of $100,000. From the beginning it was a successful enterprise, and its business grew rapidly. When the Southern Mutual Building was ready for occupancy the bank moved to its present Location—the most prominent corner location in Athens, and one that recently has been enlarged to commodious proportions to meet the demands of the bank's growing custom. The board of directors of the bank is composed of the following: John; J. Wilkins, president Georgia National Bank; M. G. Nicholson, secretary-treasurer Davison-Nicholson Co.; J. Warren Smith, vice-president Georgia National Bank; J. S. Goetchius, vice-president Georgia National Bank; W. C. Jordan, vice-president American State Bank; Howell C. Erwin, Erwin, Erwin & Nix, attorneys; Walter H. Jones, capitalist; Chas. H. Brand, congressman; L. F. Edwards, Mallison Braided Cord Co.; C. D. Flanigen, president Athens Railway & Electric Co.; Andrew M. Soule, president State College of Agriculture; Jas. W. Morton, agriculturist; Jas. F. Shehane, capitalist-banker; W. T. Brightwell, banker-capitalist; and J. T. Pittard, president Pittard Banking Co. The officers are John J. Wilkins, president; M. G. Nicholson, vice-president; J. Warren Smith, vice-president; Julian S. Goetchius, vice-president; and P. T. Betts, cashier. Mr. Wilkins has been the active directing head of the institution since its organization and to him is due a great measure of the credit for its wonderful growth. Mr. Nicholson acts principally in an advisory capacity and has contributed a great deal to the bank's success. Mr. Smith is well-known and liked throughout North Georgia and has been very active in promoting and developing the business. Mr. Goetchius is prominent throughout the state in banking and civic circles and is actively associated with and contributes greatly to the policy of business expansion enjoyed by the Georgia National. Every department of modern banking is represented in the service of this progresssive bank, and every accommodation rendered to its clientile that is consistent with sound banking. Two decades is not a Ions time in counting years, but it is a period of time that has seen Athens grow from the small town class into a city, and not a little of the advance made by Athens has come directly from and through the influence and aid of The Georgia National Bank.
