Reverend Bishop Gross, Bishop of Savannah, Georgia, came to Athens to obtain a suitable site for a Catholic church. While here he was the guest of the late Doctor Bloomfield. Father O'Brien, of Washington, Ga., had been coming here at times to say mass for the few Catholics who were residing here. The Bishop finally bought the present location upon which stands the building formerly used as the first law department of the University of Georgia,—the law office of Thomas R. R. Cobb and ex-Chief Justice Lumpkin. This building was used as a Catholic church until 1913, when the present beautiful structure was dedicated. Priests came from Sharon, Washington, Augusta and Atlanta to attend the Catholics until 1910, when Father Clark, the present pastor, was appointed by Rt. Reverend Bishop Benjamin Kelly as the first resident priest. From a "mustard seed" this congregation has had a gradual growth until it now numbers 175 souls.
