Carlton Cabells Battallion Richmond Va At Home Sept 4th 1864 Dear Brother Understanding that Cousin Sue J. will Start to Va on tomorrow I propose to avail myself of the opportunity to Send you a few lines. And it is my painful task to inform you that your youngest child is dead. She died yesterday moring of dipthoerea after an illness of perhaps about a week. I believe the most of your children have had the disease in a mild form. The rest were all well on yesterday. Jerusah, Brother is quite low with chronic diarhea. I think she will soon improve. Sister Henriettas oldest daughter is quite low with fever. I do not think she can recover. Sister Susan is sick but I hope not dangerous. Others all well. Your Brother Jefferson Jennings NOTES: Troup Artillery (Also known as Cobb Legion Artillery) Troup Light Artillery was organized at La Grange, Georgia, during the fall of 1861 with men from Troup County. This company was part of Cobb's Georgia Legion, but when ordered to Virginia it became an independent unit. It served in H.C. Cabell's Battalion of Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia. The battery fought in many conflicts from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, endured the long siege of Petersburg, and ended the war at Appomattox. One section reported 1 killed and 3 wounded out of 31 engaged at Crampton's Gap. The company sustained 9 casualties at Sharpsburg, 11 at Chancellorsville, and 7 at Gettysburg.
