My health is better than it ever was. David Sims has been sick but is well now. David cant stand it like the rest of us. Aunt Francis boys is given up to be the hardest boys in the company. They can stand anything. I received your letter yesterday. I was glad to hear from you all but was sorry to hear that Pa was sick. I thought that you all had give out writing anymore it had been so long since I got a letter from any of you. I have not. We have heard that the troop artillery has been in a fight but has not or did not know whether it is true or not. We have not heard particulars yet. Miller Lumpkin has been to Richmond and he brought the news he heard there that the troop artillery was coming back to Richmond and then to Portsmouth or Norfolk. We have not herd from George since I wrote to you before. We have wrote to him and he never gets our letter hardly. Sadi I have not received but two letters from Miss Nancy. There is something _____ in the mail or she does not write. Some mails that come dont bring but two or three letters for the hold Regiment. Some times no mail at all. It loos like out of a thousand men there ought to be some mail every time. I think the people are getting so that they dont care anything at all this_____you do even or they would writ more. I want you all to write often. Write whether I write or not. I cant write every time. I want to. I was on guard yesterday and last night and so was Henry Cook. David was on day before yesterday and William the day before that. The workmen have _____ to the navy yard to work _____. Wanted to know that they _____ there for. Sim says because they would  not give them their _____ and some soposed thim to be abolitionist. They are rebuilding those old vessels. They will have the old Merimack ready for runing in about two months or less time. You said that you wanted my ambiotype. I have money a plenty to have it taken but we have to pay from $1.25 to $8.00 to have them taken. The smalest size is $1.25 and if I have one taken I want to have it taken with my belt and cartridge case and with my gun. It will cost $3.00. I will be some time before I can have it taken. We dont get out but once a month. By the time my day comes around again I will be paid off again and then I will have it taken, if the captains will let me take my gun with me. If I can get a furlow I will come home betwixt this and Christmas. I herd that four of us could get a furlow at a time and every 15 days. If I dont come some of the dark corner boys will come. I _____ Pa wanted know whether I am willing to take $100 for Calum. If he can winter him well I had rather he would keep him. That is not enough for him. He is not even broken. He can stand as much as any bodys horse. Tell Pa to keep him without he can get $125 for him. He is werth more than that to me when I am at home. He will trade well when in _____ and if he can feed him keep him. If I come home I will come to stay about 15 or so days and then I will try to sell him or trade him for a gentle horse that will be some benefit to him while I am gone. Tell pa to get me a pair of the largest blankets he can find and send them to me and have me a pair of water proof boots made and send them. It is cold wheather here. We sleep cold every night. David Sims has wrote for blankets and Aunt Francis boys. Send them and mine together. I send my measures in the letter for the boots. Tell pa have them made if he can pay for them. He had better get Gus Langford or some of the workmen in Athens to make them. Old Franks work dont stand well. Have them _____. Send them and blankets as quick as you can. There is no blankets here. I went to Capt Billups about it twice and he said that they could not get them no where. The Griffeth boys have wrote for boots too and perhaps if you can see Jimmy Griffeth you could send them all together. Henry wrote to Jimmy to have his made. Ma if you have any butter send it in the box with the blankets. We have _____ eatings some times. David Sims has wrote for some. Put it together and send it. If pa is not able to tend to this get cousin Jim to do it. I must come to a close. Give my best respects to all my friends and folkes the same. Your effectionate Brother W.F. Cook To Sarah J.
