He made a strong and remarkable speech to the jury in his own behalf. Returning to the jail after his conviction he tried to break loose but failed. Tomorrow in Watkinsville, will be tried Jesse Whitehead the unfortunate man charged with the murder of George Hardman. Whitehead was a tenant in the employ of Hardman and the two men did not agree well. The trouble culminated in Whitehead shooting Hardman while at work in the field. For seventeen and one half months has the prisoner languished in jail. He has been incarcerated in Athens, Augusta, and Watkinsville and his face plainly shows the effects of confinement. His skin is sallow, his eyes wild and bloodshot and his cheeks sunken. The very appearance of the poor fellow is enough to arouse the sympathy of any man not utterly heartless.
