Johnson Watkinsville Margaret M. Johnson, a longtime Oconee County resident and school teacher, died Wednesday, July 31, 1996, after a short illness. She was 82 years old and had lived in Watkinsville since early childhood. She was married to the late Ferdinand Johnson, former editor of the Oconee Enterprise. Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of Captain Jake and Maggie McGuire. "Miss Margaret," as she was known, taught school for 40 years, 38 of which were as fourth grade teacher in the Oconee County school system. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Arthur Bowick's Oconee Chapel. Burial will be in the Watkinsville City Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Nan Johnson Mills of Watkinsville, who also teaches in the Oconee County school system; two sisters, Frances M. Weatherford and Florine M. Ward, both of Watkinsville; three sisters-in-law, Mildred Johnson and Elma McGuire, both of Watkinsville, and Agnes Willingham, Augusta; 13 nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. Those desiring are requested to make donations to the Watkinsville City Cemetery Fund. Joe B. Austin Athens Joe B. Austin, 73, of 485 Club Drive, died Tuesday, July 30, 1996. A native of Pelzer, S.C., Mr. Austin was a resident of Athens for 12 years having moved from Boston. He worked for 43 years with the Kendall Co., Division of Colgate-Palmolive. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens. He was a Mason and a member of the Lions Club in Pelzer, S.C. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Anderson, S.C. Dr. Jon Appleton will officiate. Survivors include his wife, Catherine B. Austin; two sons, Michael Barnwell Austin, Marietta, and Douglas Joe Austin, Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, W.E. Austin, Athens, and Harold L. Austin, Thomasville, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Margaret Emily Austin and Michael Anderson Austin, both of Marietta. The family will receive friends from 7-9 tonight at Bernstein Funeral Home. Bruce Homer Carlton Young Bruce, 69, of 143 Chambers St., died Tuesday, July 30, 1996. A native of Jackson County, Mr. Bruce was a son of the late Mark and Willie Mae Seay Bruce. He was retired from the Georgia State Highway Department. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at Little-Ward Funeral Home chapel, Commerce, with the Rev. Mickey Hyatt officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Baptist Church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Trilla Mae Bruce; two sons, Paul Bruce and Young Bruce, both of Homer; a daughter, Judy Brown, Bogart; two brothers, Grover Bruce and Pierce Bruce, both of Commerce; two sisters, Sadie Adams, Commerce, and Bessie Segars, Homer; and three grandchildren. The family is at the residence. Christine George Elberton Christine George, 91, died Wednesday, July 24, 1996. A native of Newton County, Miss George was a daughter of the late Henry Frank and Flora Edwards George. She was retired from the Atlanta School System where she had taught kindergarten and blind students for 40 years. She was a graduate of Oglethorpe University and was a member of First Baptist Church of Covington. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Berry Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jack Wilson and Dr. C.E. Jackson officiating. Survivors include three sisters, Frances McLanahan, Elberton, Katherine G. Henderson, Smyrna, and Marian G. Tanner, Mount Dora, Fla.; and a niece, Sandra M. Worley, Elberton; and other nieces and nephews. Edwards Union Point Thomas Franklin Edwards, 92, of 760 Centerhill School Road N.W., died Monday, July 29, 1996. A native of Taliaferro County, Mr. Edwards was a son of the late Thomas H. and Stella Portwood Edwards and widower of Pearl Yearwood Edwards. He was a retired dairyman and farmer and a member of Robinson Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Callaway Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward Guindon officiating. Burial will be in Crawfordville Cemetery, Crawfordville. Survivors include a son, Charles T. Edwards, Union Point; two brothers, Cobb Edwards, Crawfordville, and Lawrence Edwards, Greensboro; two daughters, Alice E. Kimbrel, Grovetown, and Beatrice E. Williams, Savannah; a sister, Nancy E.
