Carter Montgomery, Ala. Nannie Skannal Carter, 91, formerly of Commerce, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 1996. Mrs. Carter was a daughter of the late Mary Brandon and Abel Cunyus Skannal and the widow of R.L. Pittman Carter. A native of Arkansas, she was a retired French teacher with Jackson County School System and was a member of First Baptist Church of Commerce. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Don Paulson officiating. Burial will be in Dry Pond United Methodist Church Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Rilla Carter Keith, Montgomery, Ala.; a sister, Mary Skannal Pons, Georgetown, Colo.; a son-in-law, the Rev. John Matthew Keith, Montgomery, Ala.; and a granddaughter, Lauren Carter Keith, San Pedro Sual, Honduras. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church, Commerce, or Grace Episcopal Church, Mount Meigs, Ala. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce. Velma Jowers Athens Velma Damron Jowers, 89, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 1996. A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Jowers was a daughter of the late Samuel and Ovie Tolbert Damron and the widow of Frank Jowers. She was a member of Johnson Drive Baptist Church. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oconee Hill Cemetery. Survivors include nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East. Charlotte D. Gaines Athens Charlotte Dial Gaines, 87, of Winston Drive died Sunday, Dec. 1, 1996. A native of Oconee County, Mrs. Gaines was a daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine Tiller Dial and the widow of Julius Gaines. She was a member of Athens First Christian Church. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Ray Austin officiating. Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte G. Evans Commerce Marie Mae Evans, 66, of 404 Hoods Mill Road died Sunday, Dec. 1, 1996. A native of Michigan, Mrs. Evans was a widow of Thomas Evans. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home with the Rev. Gilbert Standridge officiating. Burial will be in Grey Hill Cemetery. Jones Statham Mattie Lou Jones, 76, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 1996. A native of Barrow County, Mrs. Jones was a daughter of the late Jim and Myrtle Martin. She was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church and an employee of Statham Garment for 30 years. A native of Elbert County, Mr. Skelton was a son of the late Berry Devant and Laura Burden Skelton. He was a retired revenue agent for the state of Georgia and was a member of Bowman Lions Club, Georgia Peace Officers Association, Georgia Sheriffs Association and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
