Burkhart Athens Dr. Walter Clinton Burkhart, 104, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 1996. A native of Woodsfield, Ohio, Dr. Burkhart was a son of the late Charles Burkhart and Catherine Long Burkhart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Pennington Burkhart. Dr. Burkhart received his D.V.M. degree in 1916 from the School of Veterinary Medicine, Ohio State University, where he was member of Alpha Psi social fraternity. He came to Athens in 1916 as an instructor in bacteriology at the University of Georgia and also was director of the State Hog Cholera Virus and Serum Laboratory. In 1933, the veterinary program was discontinued and Dr. Burkhart joined the College of Arts and Sciences, where he taught bacteriology and was head of the bacteriology department. His basic bacteriology class was a required class for students in five different colleges. In 1957, he joined the College of Veterinary Medicine and taught until his retirement in 1960 at the age of 67. During his 44 years of teaching at the university he influenced many students who remember him today not only as an exceptional teacher but also as a man whose high standards required that they perform at their best. Some of Dr. Burkhart's major contributions to science have been in the fields of hog cholera virus and serum production, bacterial examination of milk, control of infectious abortion in cattle, streptococci mastitis, protozoal disease of domestic animals, bacterial vaccines and white diarrhea of chickens. Dr. Burkhart was nationally known and an outstanding man in the field of science. He was selected for "Who's Who, American Men of Science." He was a fellow in the American Association of Science for the Advancement of Science and was a member of the Society of American Bacteriologists. He was a member of the Honorary Society of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Zeta. He was president of the South Eastern Branch of the Society of American Bacteriologists. He was a member of the Mount Vernon Lodge 22 F. and A.M. and completed 75 years in the Masonic fraternity. He served as first lieutenant in the Veterinary Corps in World War II. The University of Georgia and the citizens of this state are indeed fortunate to have had a man of this caliber who devoted his entire life to the instruction of students and the advancement of science. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Oconee Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Grady Wigley officiating. Survivors include two daughters, Catherine B. Healey and Ann Burkhart; two grandsons, Charles S. Healey II and William Walter Healey; five great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Charles S. Healey, William W. Healy, T. Kevin Healey, Dr. James Keller, Warren Wilkinson, Dr. William Van Eseltine, S.E. Hogan and Ralph Smith. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Bridges Funeral Home. Littleton Toccoa Callie Pauline Scott Littleton, 76, of 1253 Talmadge Drive died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 1996. A native of Stephens County, Mrs. Littleton was a daughter of the late John Scott and Pauline Smith Scott. She was employed by Toccoa Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Chopped Oak Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Acree-Davis Funeral Home, the Revs. Alvin Burns and Estes Littleton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Clarence Littleton; a daughter, Joyce Pace, Toccoa; two sons, Bobby Littleton and Steve Littleton, both of Toccoa; a brother, the Rev. Ben Scott, Toccoa; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Pallbearers include Scott Littleton, Wesley Pace, Bobby Frady, Jerry Littleton, Eddie Justice and Lloyd Frady. The family is at the residence and will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Lily M. Dobbs Toccoa Lily Meldrim Williamson Dobbs, 97, a resident of The Clary Care Center, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 1996. A native of Darien, Mrs. Dobbs was a daughter of the late Tom Meldrim and Marion Schmidt Meldrim. She was the widow of Hugh Dobbs. She attended Brenau College and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She owned and operated the Empire Monument Co., Atlanta. She was also a member of the Tulip Club of Atlanta and was a member of St. Phillips Cathedral. Funeral services will be at 11:30 Saturday in the chapel of H.M. Patterson and Son, Atlanta, with the Revs. Sam Buice and Dean David Collins officiating. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters, Sarah W. Sobke, St. Simons Island, and Marion W. Lockman, Toccoa; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family is at the home of C.D. Lockman, 826 E. Savannah St., and will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Acree-Davis Funeral Home. Gladys C. Miller Toccoa Gladys Cothran Price Miller, 82, a resident of The Clary Care Center, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 1996. A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Miller was a daughter of the late Richard C. Cothran and Cora South Cothran. She was a widow of Paul Price and Alton Miller and was preceded in death by an infant son. She was a homemaker and a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and a former member of Clarks Creek Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today in the chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with the Revs. Jerry Stowe and J.W. Stowe officiating. Burial will be in Franklin Memorial Gardens. Survivors include a son, Terry Price, Toccoa; a brother, Jimmy Cothran, Toccoa; a sister, Viola Babb, Toccoa; and two grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Dr. Truett Watson, Ronnie Cothran, Mike Cothran, Ricky Cothran, Steve Cothran, Charles Matthews and Guy Matthews. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon today at the mortuary. The family is at the home of Terry Price, 310 LeTourneau Drive, Toccoa. Tom A. Scott Detroit Tom Anderson Scott, 74, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 1996. A native of Martin, Mr. Scott was a son of the late Lester Scott and Mary Scott. He was the widower of Priscilla Johnson. He was a member of the Greater Hope Baptist Church, Martin. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Chrysler. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the church with the Revs. Michael Johnson and W.I. Gober officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Marzona Wortham Athens Marzona Wortham, 81, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 1996. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Wortham was a daughter of the late Willie H. Seagraves and Anna Bradley Seagraves. She was a widow of Guy Wortham, and was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Wortham. She was a member of Young Harris Methodist Church and a member of its Friendship Class. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, West, with Dr. Dan Crawford officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Annie Sue Turner Danielsville Annie Sue Bond Turner, 94, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 1996. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Turner was a daughter of the late Joe L. Bond and Mae Porterfield Bond. She was a widow of George O. Turner. She was a homemaker and a member of Meadow Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church with the Revs. Dayton Logan and Eugene Pettyjohn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Survivors include two sons, J.H. Turner, Danielsville, and Donald Turner, Hull; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. The family is at the sons' residences and will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Brown Funeral Home. Myrtle L. Mitchell Florence, Ala. Myrtle Linville Mitchell, 73, died Monday, Nov. 4, 1996. Mrs. Mitchell was a widow of Sam H. Mitchell Jr. Graveside services were Wednesday. Survivors include two sons, Sam H. Mitchell Jr., Athens, and Charles K. Mitchell, Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Louise Montgomery, Cloverdale, Ala.; a brother, Osbie "Hot" Linville, Florence, Ala.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Elkins Funeral Home, Florence, Ala., was in charge of arrangements. Mary Ann Thomas Monroe Mary Ann Mundy Thomas, 61, of 478 Carver Drive died Sunday, Nov. 3, 1996. A native of Walton County, Mrs. Thomas was a daughter of the late John T. Mundy and Eva Smith Mundy. She was a watch secretary at Walton Medical Center, Monroe, and a member of the Mother Board at Knox Chapel. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday. Survivors include her husband, George Frank Thomas Jr.; a daughter, Sylvia Hadnott, Decatur; two sons, Antonio Mundy and Daryl Baccus, both of Monroe; and nieces and nephews.
