Hunt Athens Jacob "Jake" Tate Hunt, 79, UGA emeritus professor of special education, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 1996. A native of Sweetwater, Tenn., Mr. Hunt graduated from Tennessee Military Institute and received degrees from Maryville College and the University of Tennessee. He taught regular and special classes at Knoxville, Tenn., and Anacortes, Wash. He received a commission as an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserves and served on a mine sweeper in the Aleutian Islands and a destroyer escort in the South Pacific. After receiving a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, he taught at the University of North Carolina, University of Arizona and the University of Washington before coming to the University of Georgia in 1968 as professor and head of programs on special education. He was a visiting professor at the University of Colorado, University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Illinois and held a Ford Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Illinois. In addition to his own publications, he was editor-in-chief of three journals: "The Review of Educational Research," "The High School Journal" and "Education and Training of the Mentally Retarded," and was U.S. editor of a foreign journal published in three languages. He belonged to the Council for Exceptional Children, American Psychological Association, American Association on Mentally Deficiency Association, International Reading Association and was a member of the Board of Directors or Board of Editors for five of them. He was a field reader and consultant for many years to the U.S. Bureau of the Handicapped, which rated the UGA program in the top five programs during his tenure. He served in a similar capacity at regional, state and local levels and was a manuscript evaluator for three book publishers. After retiring in 1984 as emeritus professor of special education, he participated in community services as treasurer of the Athens Area Food Bank and IRS-AARP consultant for seniors. He was president of the Athens Area Kiwanis Club. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Athens. Dr. Glenn Doak will officiate. Survivors include his wife, Harriet; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Steven and Wendy Hunt, Denton, Texas; a sister, Madge Burnett, Fremont, Mich.; a grandson, David Hunt; a stepgrandson, Michael Raphael; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Athens Area Food Bank. Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. James Henry Finch Harlem James Henry "Red" Finch Sr., 75, of 1360 Freeman Harris Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 1996. A native of Barrow County, Mr. Finch was a retired paint and body repairman. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was of the Baptist faith. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Friday in South Harlem Memorial Cemetery. Sister Chris will officiate. Survivors include his wife, Lois Finch; two sons, James Henry Finch Jr., Glennmore, Texas, and Paul Terry Finch, Hull; seven daughters, Shirley Gentry, Atlanta, Freida Stewart, Athens, Weida Duncan and Amber Wideman, both of Harlem, Brenda Poss, Colbert, Wanda Flanagan, Winterfield, and Connie Mallett, Pasadena, Texas; 23 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7-9 tonight at Starling Funeral Home. Zdenek Kristin Athens Dr. Zdenek Kristin, 76, of 168 Hart Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 1996. A native of Czechoslovakia, Dr. Kristin was a son of the late Richard Kristinek and Josefa Bramborova Kristinkova. He had lived in Athens for the past 27 years. He was veterinarian with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and was with Seaboard Farms for a number of years. Private services will be held. Survivors include his wife, Vera B. Kristin; two daughter, Vera Kristin, Watkinsville, and Helene Polster, Athens; two sons, Richard Kristin, Santa Fe, N.M., and Willy Kristin, Comer; and a sister, Runa Souckova, Czech Republic. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Bridges Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Helen W. Hanley Commerce Helen W. Hanley, 83, of 84 Lakeview Drive, died Monday, Aug. 7, 1996. A native of Green County, Mrs. Hanley was a daughter of the late John Morgan and Mamie Maley Wilhite. She was a member of Commerce Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Commerce Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Woody Brown and Tom Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Jackson Memorial Gardens. Survivors include her husband, J. Tom Hanley; a son, John Thomas Hanley Jr., Watkinsville; two sisters, Louise Wright and Sarah Colquitt, both of Commerce; and a grandson. Memorials may be made to Commerce Presbyterian Church. The family is at the residence and will receive friends from 7-9 tonight at Little-Ward Funeral Home. Sandra Simmons Smyrna Sandra Simmons, 32, formerly of Hoschton, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 1996. A native of Barrow County, Mrs. Simmons was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Simmons of Hoschton. She was a 1982 graduate of Jefferson High School and a 1987 graduate of Georgia Technical Institute. She was a member of the Church of Christ and was an organizer for the Summer End Festival and road race held in Winder. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Home chapel, Winder, with Ron Cope and Marvin Bryant officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens. Survivors, in addition to her parents, include two sisters, Susan Simmons Gray, Jefferson, and Kristie Simmons Lewis, Dacula; her grandmothers, Cola Mae Simmons and Mamie Williams, both of Jefferson; and a nephew. Charlie Whitley Athens Charlie Whitley, 66, of 215 Harve Mathis Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 1996. A native of Athens, Mr. Whitley was a son of the late C.E. and Nell Scarborough Whitley. He was of the Baptist faith. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Bernstein Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Buford Lockman officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Dianne Whitley; three sons, Gerald Dwayne Whitley, Covington, and Steven Lanier Whitley and Hoyt Darren Whitley, both of Athens; three daughters, Rita Ann Weaver and Rita Nicole Senclair, both of Danielsville, and Sandra Gail Syfrett, Hull; a brother, J.W. Whitley, Watkinsville; a sister, Snow Payne, Danielsville; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. William Roy Dewberry Winder William Roy Dewberry, 72, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 1996. A native of Barrow County, Mr. Dewberry was a son of the late William and Ethel Pratt Dewberry. He was retired from Lockheed Georgia Corp. and was a member of Martin's Chapel United Methodist Church, Lawrenceville. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Carter-Stewart Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in Martin's Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery. Survivors include six daughters, Barbara Maddox and Jennifer Parks, both of Dacula, Nancy Corbin, Auburn, Gayle Howard, Cumming, and Peggy Phillips and Sandra Odom, both of Buford; two sons, Billy Dewberry, Grayson, and Jack Dewberry, Auburn; a sister, Dorothy Wilson, South Carolina; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
