Jack Turner Athens Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Jack Alden Turner, 66, of 785 Riverbend Parkway died Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996. A native of Birmingham, Ala., Col. Turner was a son of the late Clyde and Mildred Wood Turner. He had lived in Athens for 13 years. He graduated from the University of Georgia, where he was president of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He retired from the Air Force after more than 29 years of service to his country, 26 of which were as an officer. He flew 791 combat missions over Vietnam, for which he received five Air Medals for bravery in flight and the Distinguished Flying Cross for valor in combat. He was also the recipient of the Vietnam Service Medal with five bronze service stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm, Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit. After retirement, he was an assistant vice-president of operations for five years with Merrill Lynch in Alabama. He taught science at West Lauren High School, Dublin, and at Clarke Central High School. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Garnett Wilder and Grady Wiggley officiating. Graveside services will be in the National Cemetery with full military honors. Survivors include his wife, Muriel Dozier Turner; four daughters, Sandi Turner, Athens, Jackie Turner, Atlanta, Mary Turner Martin, Charleston, S.C., and Chandelle Summer, Gainesville; two sons-in-law, Maj. Ed Martin, Charleston, S.C., and Dan Summer, Gainesville; two granddaughters, Shannon Martin, Charleston, S.C., and Georgia Summer, Gainesville; and six grandsons, Michael Jones, Lexington, S.C., Matthew Martin, Athens, and Joseph Summer, Jack Summer, Jacob Summer, and Jeffery Summer, all of Gainesville. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Serenity East, 1060 Gaines School Road, Athens, Ga. 30605, or to the Alzheimer Association's Family Relief Fund. Ethel Free Toccoa Ethel Heaton Free, 89, of 209 Clearview Drive died Sunday, Dec. 8, 1996. A native of Habersham County, Mrs. Free was a daughter of the late Flay J. Sr. and Fannie Dodd Heaton and the widow of James Robert "Rawl" Free. She was preceded in death by a son, William R. Free. She worked as an antique dealer for many years in Atlanta. She was a member of Chopped Oak Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with the Rev. Ernest Ivester officiating. Burial will be in Chopped Oak Baptist Church Cemetery. Survivors include a brother, Flay J. Heaton, Toccoa; two sisters, Irene Arguello and Flacey Dean, both of Toccoa; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; and nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Frank Dean, Michael Garrett, Wayne Colston, Bob Glore, and Robbie Stienspring. The family will receive friends 10 a.m.-noon today at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of Mrs. Sloan Dean, Talmadge Drive, Toccoa. Dock Gragg Toccoa Dock Gragg, 76, of 646 Elberton St. died Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996. A native of Rabun County, Mr. Gragg was a son of the late John and Della Gosnell Gragg. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Sue Gragg. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean conflict. He retired from Coats & Clark, Toccoa, after 36 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Chapel, Acree-Davis Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Sosebee officiating. Burial will be in Stephens Memorial Gardens. Survivors include a wife, Beulah Nations Gragg; three daughters, Joan Ausburn, Seneca, S.C., and Allene Holmes and Vernell Cantrell, both of Toccoa; three brothers, Finus Gragg, Lakemont, and Gordon Gragg and Amos Gragg, both of Toccoa; a sister, Buna Treadway, Dalton; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Stanley Keller, Ray Bell, Bobby Honea, Bill Collier, Kenneth Keller, and Robert Haynes. The family will receive friends 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family will be at the residence. JoAnn Agnew Danielsville JoAnn Curry Agnew, 65, of 105 Kenny Drive died Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996. A native of Sylva, N.C., Mrs. Agnew was a daughter of the late Edward Grant and Gurleen Bryson Hyde. She was a retired finance and insurance manager with Timberman Motors, Elberton. She was a member of Mount Hermon Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Martha Courie officiating. Burial will be in Old Field Cemetery, Sylva, N.C. Survivors include her husband, Fred R. Agnew; two sons, Russell E. Agnew, Mars Hill, N.C., and Jeff Agnew, Gainesville; two sisters, Curry Jamison and Carolyn C. Bradley, both of Asheville, N.C.; and seven grandchildren. The family is at the residence and will receive friends at the funeral home, 10-11 a.m. Tuesday.
